Practice

Kawalek+Kawalek Architects, LLC (KKA) provides architectural design, planning, and consulting services to a wide range of clients. Founded by principal emeritus Harold J. Kawalek in 1976, the firm was joined in 2001 by Stephen M. Kawalek, who became a principal in 2005.

KKA has thousands of projects of every scale to its credit. Our residential work encompasses alterations, additions, and new construction ranging from single family homes to multi-unit developments and mixed-use buildings. We also boast an extensive list of commercial projects, including medical; professional; hospitality; institutional; industrial; and warehouse design. We have long been sought out for professional consultations and expert testimony.

Part nuts-and-bolts practice, part design studio, KKA draws on decades of hands-on experience, as well as rigorous modern design training, to form an approach that is academic, artistic, and pragmatic all at once. We strive to provide a high level of service, while continuing to embrace new challenges and remaining dedicated to the idea that each project is a unique response to the particular needs of the client.

Areas

From single and two-family homes to multiple dwellings and mixed-use buildings, KKA has designed a diverseportfolio of structures for infill lots in a variety of urban settings. These are typically comprehensive undertakings, starting with zoning and feasibility analysis and proceeding through preliminary and final design documentation, municipal approvals, permitting, and construction supervision. Each project in this space represents a unique opportunity for the firm to add to its long experience re-energizing the urban fabric.

Alteration and Additions

Renovating, expanding, or re-purposing existing structures, whether commercial, residential, or otherwise, is a key area of focus for our practice. These kinds of projects—including additions; interior and exterior reconfigurations; changes of use; and other types of built interventions—tend to create meaningful impacts in the lives of our clients. They also tend to offer us the kinds of rigorous constraints that can keep even the smallest projects interesting.

Commercial

Our commercial includes alterations, additions, new construction, fit-outs, and changes of use, addressing the needs of clients with office, medical, retail, warehousing, hospitality, institutional, and other non-residential uses.
